The purpose of the Wildland Search & Rescue Team is to assist Fire Officers in establishing an efficient command & control procedures for wildland searches and provide highly trained personnel to assist in organizing and deploying groups of firefighters into hard target search teams. Working as an extension of the service provided by NYS DEC Forest Rangers, Wildland Search & Rescue Team members can add additional resources where they are needed most.

The Wildland Search & Rescue Team is comprised of firefighters from the 40 fire departments in Sullivan County.

The Team consists of five divisions broken down by battalion. This structure provides team integrity and focuses on team member's familiarity with their respective Battalions.

1) WSRT Division-1        Battalion 1

2) WSRT Division-2        Battalion 2

3) WSRT Division-3        Battalion 3

4) WSRT Division-4        Battalion 4

5) WSRT Division-5        Battalion 5

Overall supervision of this team falls under the authority and direction of the Deputy Fire Coordinator for Special Operations who acts as the highest-ranking officer of the team as per the County Fire Coordinator.              

Team training and guidelines are based on standard wildland search & rescue techniques practiced by the NYS DEC Forest Ranger Division which follow a recognized national standard.
