Agriculture

Agriculture represents one of the largest economic sectors in Sullivan County, with the combined output value of agriculture exceeding $68,000,000 in 2010. Generally, Sullivan County's agricultural operations supply the New York Metropolitan Area with eggs, milk, meats and other specialty farm products.

In addition to the direct economic benefit that farms create, our agricultural producers provide us with fresh local foods, support other local businesses across many sectors, and preserve the rural character that our residents and visitors value so highly. Sullivan County strongly supports our agricultural industry, and we seek to help our producers diversify, expand and increase their viability at the local and regional levels. Following are several resources that we hope will be helpful to new and existing farmers and agricultural businesses.

Agricultural and Farmland Protection

County Plan Update - 2014

This County has begun the process to update the existing Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan, adopted in 1999. We have achieved many of the tasks identified in the plan. While building on the success of implementing the 1999 Plan, our overall goal for the plan update is to include all stakeholders in identifying and prioritizing actions that will increase the economic viability of all kinds of agriculture and agri-business enterprises in Sullivan County. Our anticipated outcome is the creation of a document that sets forth achievable objectives and identifies action steps, responsible parties, and timeframes for meeting those objectives and reaching our goals. The anticipated project end date is August 2014.

The Sullivan County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan, which was developed in 1997, will be updated by the Sullivan County Division of Planning and Environmental Management (DPEM) with assistance from Community Planning & Environmental Associates. The project will receive oversight from the Sullivan County Ag & Farmland Protection Plan and assistance from the Agricultural Advisory Board. Municipal Plans:

During the years 2008-2010, the towns of Bethel, Callicoon, Delaware and Liberty developed and adopted agriculture and farmland protection plans to protect, promote and diversify agriculture in their towns. This work was made possible by a grant from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, and was facilitated by the Sullivan County Division of Planning and Environmental Management.
